The Diners Club International card was the first credit card to come onto the scene. It was developed in 1950 by Frank McNamara. He was entertaining a group of businessmen and women at a local restaurant when he realized that he had left his wallet at home and had no way to pay for the meal. He knew the establishment's owner and left his business card instead as an IOU, paying for the dinner later. This idea inspired him to develop a card that would allow people to 'pay' for their meals via credit and as a proof of the individual's identity.
